Welcome from Acting Headteacher
Melrose School is a specialist school catering for pupils aged 5-16 years with an Education, Health and Care Plan. All of our pupils have a primary social, emotional, mental health need and many will have additional needs such as ADHD, speech, language and communication needs or experienced current or historical trauma.
All of the children who attend Melrose School do so because mainstream education was not able to meet their needs and therefore our primary aim is to provide a nurturing and safe environment to re-engage children in their learning.
All pupils benefit from small class sizes and teaching from a highly skilled and nurturing staff team. Pupils in Primary are taught across four mixed-aged classes. Pupils in Years 7-9 are taught in what we refer to as our ‘Nurture Provision’ which is an extension of our Primary teaching model offering extended support for pupils who would benefit from one classroom base with consistent teaching staff for the majority of the school day. Pupils in Key Stages 1-3 access the range of National Curriculum subjects which are differentiated and presented in creative and meaningful ways.
Key Stage 4 pupils continue to be taught in small class sizes whilst having access to pastoral support from an assigned Tutor and subjects being taught by specialist teachers. Pupils work towards GCSE or equivalent qualifications which are bespoke to each pupils’ needs and enables pupils to move on to their next educational pathway. We also work closely with alternative education providers to offer a range of vocational courses providing further qualification options based on pupils’ needs and interests.
Our curriculum provision is enhanced through weekly sessions known as Social Development Opportunities that offer the pupils experiences that develop their self-esteem and resilience such as cooking, rock climbing and sports coaching.
We work with a range of professionals who are integrated within the life of Melrose school and offer pupils access to specialist services and therapeutic provision. This includes CAMHS, Art and Play Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Safer Schools Officer, Social Worker and Greenhouse Mentor.
We are very proud of the provision we offer our pupils and would be pleased to welcome you in our school to learn more.
